Cambridge, January 20, 2005
The tsunami of December 26, 2004 was a topic of enormous
concern in the combined grade 2/3 classroom at the Lesley
Ellis School in Arlington, Massachusetts, USA.
The students, aged 7 to 8, explored the world map to
locate the areas of damage, investigated the countries
affected and studied earthquakes and tidal waves. One
of the children had been to Sri Lanka and told the others
about swimming in the sea at the now devastated south
coast.
The children wanted to aid young tsunami survivors directly.
They knew that the local organisation SARID was taking
relief provisions to areas in Sri Lanka where schools
and houses had been destroyed or damaged by the tidal
waves. So they went home and emptied piggy banks and delved
into their savings and allowances to present their teacher
Jennifer Young with $200 in all to help schoolchildren
through SARID.
Now SARID is sending these funds, donated with so much
compassion, to Sri Lanka, where it will be used to obtain
school supplies or even rebuild a schoolhouse.
Thank you Lesley Ellis 2/3 class!
